Fast Food Workers

Effective April 1, 2024, the hourly minimum wage for fast food restaurant employees is twenty dollars ($20) per hour.  Cal. Labor Code section 1475(d)(2)(A).  In order to qualify for this wage, an employee must work for a restaurant that meets the following requirements:
  • Limited-Service Restaurant:  The restaurant is primarily engaged in providing food and beverages for immediate consumption on or the premises where patrons generally order or select items and pay before consuming, and the restaurant has limited or no table service.  Labor Code section 1474(a).
  • National Fast Food Chain:  The restaurant is party of a fast food chain that consists of more than 60 establishments nationally.
  • Exceptions:  The following businesses are exempt from paying the $20 wage:
  • Bakery:  A bakery that produces bread for sale on it's premises as a stand-alone menu item is not a fast food restaurant.
  • Located in Grocery Establishment:  A restaurant is exempt if (1) it is located in a grocery establishment that is over 15,000 square feet in size and sells primarily household foodstuffs for offsite consumption and (2) the grocery establishment employer employs the individuals working in the restaurant

Long Beach Hotel Workers

In the City of Long Beach, employees of any hotel containing one hundred (100) or more gust rooms or suites are entitled to the following benefits:

  • Minimum Wage:  Hotel workers are entitled to the following minimum wage:
  • Beginning July 1, 2024:  $23.00 per hour
  • Beginning July 1, 2025:  $25.00 per hour
  • Beginning July 1, 2026:  $26.50 per hour
  • Beginning July 1, 2027:  $28.00 per hour
  • Beginning July 1, 2028:  $29.50 per hour
  • Payment of Service Charges:  Service charges paid by hotel customers for service performed by a hotel employee shall not be retained by the hotel and shall be paid in the entirety to the hotel worker(s) performing the service.
  • Sick Leave:  Hotel workers are entitled to at least five (5) compensated days off per calendar year for sick leave. 
  • Payment for Unused Sick Leave:  Hotels shall pay employees a lump sum payment at the end of the calendar year equivalent to the compensation due for any unused sick leave.

Health Care Workers

Effective 10/16/24, health care workers at covered facilities receive the following minimum wage.  Health care workers include, but are not limited to, nurses, caregivers, medical residents, interns, fellows, support staff, janitors, housekeepers, laundry, food services, groundskeepers, security guards, clerical staff, schedulers, billers, call center, warehouse workers, and gift shop employees.
